Thank Giving Day and Black Friday

アメリカに来て初めてのThanks Giving Day。日本のお盆のようにみんな実家に帰り、家族で七面鳥を食べるということは何となく知ってたが、その翌日のBlack Fridayについては今回初めて知った。ようは、バーゲンシーズンの開始日のことなのだがWikipediaによると

Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving in the United States, where it is the beginning of the traditional Christmas shopping season. 訳してみると、、

ブラックフライデーは米国におけるサンクスギビングの翌日のこと。で、この日が伝統のクリスマスショッピング•シーズンの開始となる。米国ではサンクスギビングは11月の第四木曜日にあたるので、早いときで11月23日、遅いときで11月29日になる。ブラックフライデーは公式な休日ではないが、多くの会社は休みになり、クリスマス•ショッピング•シーズンに突入することとなる。小売店では前もってクリスマスの飾り付けを済ませているところもある。多くの小売店ではとても早く(たいて朝の5時とか)に店を開け、目玉となる"広告の品"を出す。.. 省略 .. "ブラックフライデー"は元々は、当日の大渋滞から名付けられたが、最近では小売店が黒字になる(利益が出る)期間の始まりを意味する。

ということで、ここ数日の新聞はチラシの山。すごい量である。テレビのニュースでも前日からお店の前に並ぶ列を映していた。そして猛烈な値下げが行われるらしい。
