陪審員召喚状がやってきた

先日郵便受けにサンマテオ裁判所からの手紙が。何かと思って開けてみるとJury Summons、すなわち陪審員召喚状。

アメリカ市民でない小職は陪審員をする義務はないので、それ用のフォームを埋めて返信用の封筒で裁判所に送り返した。
ちなみに、カリフォルニアのサンマテオ裁判所の陪審員を免除されるのは以下の場合。

All persons are eligible and qualified to be prospective trial jurors, except the following:

1. Persons who are not citizens of the United States.
2. Persons less than 18 years of age.
3. Persons not living in the State of California.
4. Persons who are not residents of San Mateo County.
5. Persons convicted of malfeasance in office or a felony, and whose civil rights have not been restored.
6. Persons who do not possess sufficient knowledge of the English language are not automatically exempted from jury duty. The judiciary will make the decision to either grant or deny this exemption. No person shall be deemed incompetent solely because of the loss of sight, hearing or other disability.
7. Persons serving as grand or trial jurors in any court of this state.
8. Persons who are the subject of conservatorship.
9. Persons who are peace officers as defined in Penal Code §830.1 or §830.2(a).

選挙登録した人のリストと、DMV(運手免許等を扱うお役所)にある運転免許書を持っているリストを元に陪審員候補者リストを作っているようだ。

The list of registered voters and the Department of Motor Vehicles' list of licensed drivers and identification cardholder's, are appropriate source lists for selection of jurors.

Jury Dutyのため仕事に来れないというメールもたまにチームのDLに流れてくる(その人はアメリカ市民)。ちなみに、弊社では欠勤ではなくJury Dutyという区分の休み申請がある。
